City Council appoints DRB member who opposes 2nd story houses in Goleta.

May 2005 - The Goleta City Council appoints Gary Vandeman to the Goleta DRB (Design Review Board). Mr. Vandeman has been a strong opponent of homeowners rights to build second story additions to their homes in Goleta.

Mr. Vandeman has already filed an appeal to reverse the decision of the DRB for the 2nd story addition proposed at 168 Salisbury Ave.

Here is a copy of an article written by Mr. Vandeman that clearly reflects his biased position against homeowners rights to build a 2nd story additions in Goleta.

Ups and downs of two-story house

I would like to explain how my neighbors my neighbors will benefit if I build a two-story how in the midst of a traditional single-story neighborhood.

View: Me – I get a better view that will increase my property value. My penthouse will have uninterrupted sky in every direction. I have an enhanced view of the mountains. I may even be able to see the ocean.

You – You get a view of the towering walls of my magnificent house.

Sunshine: Me – I will reap the benefits of a longer day an more natural light. Mi high perch will catch the morning rays earlier and keep the evening light longer than before.

You – You will benefit by having a longer night. Depending on your location, the bulk of my house will delay the sunrise, or accelerate the sunset at your house, but only by a few minutes. Those who prefer a cooler climate and less sunshine will really appreciate this.

Parking: Me – I will have the option of retiring. When I don’t need the extra five bedrooms for my children or parents, I can rent them out. This will only add five cars that need curbside parking.

You – You’ll benefit by being motivated to clear out your garage so you can park off street.

Privacy: Me – I’ll continue to have a private back yard. It doesn’t bother me that I’ll have to look into the back yards and rear windows of at least six neighbors.

You – While your backyard is no longer private, your daughters may continue to use their back yard to maintain their suntans. I do not mind. You are welcome.
