Jonny Wallis abandons 'old town' Goleta - offers flimsy excuse
In 2003 a project was proposed project for old town Goleta that provides a hotel and condominium complex, not to mention a much needed face lift for the area. Jonny Wallis has worked to establish a reputation for being 'the voice of old town'.

Old town residents have shown overwhelming support of this project.

So what does Jonny Wallis - the 'voice of old town' - do when it comes to support old town residents for whom she is proposed to be 'the voice for'? Jonny recuses herself from the project.

For those unfamiliar with legal jargon, recuse is a legal term for excuse, meaning that Jonny refused to be at all meetings on this issue that is clearly desired by the great majority of old town residents.

Why on earth would such a thing happen? Jonny claims she lives too close to the project, and therefore she must recuse herself.

The Facts

• The distance Jonny lives from the proposed project has not been accurately established.
• When the question of distance was presented, a local firm even offered to survey the location of Jonny's residence to confirm she was in fact NOT too close, but Jonny refused.
• Even if Jonny did live "too close" there was not clear legal reason for her not to vote on the project.

When Jonny recused herself old town residents were outraged. This is NOT good for Jonny politically, especially with the election approaching Nov 2^nd 2004. Now watch the seemingly blatant hypocrisy on the part of the city council¹ - especially Cynthia Brock - in an attempt to help Jonny recover from her blunder. Cynthia Brock suddenly changes her long-standing anti-development position, and votes in favor of the project stating 'if this is what the people want, they should have it'.

Don't get your hopes up too high, if you're in favor of this project. There were so many unfair (and some even ridiculous) conditions placed on the 'approval', that the project had still not received final approval that at the time of this writing (Oct 2004).

If you're a Goleta resident, do you want to suffer another term of this type of underhanded dealing and hypocrisy? If not be sure to vote for 2 Goleta City Council members who give Goleta citizens choice.

¹Brock is well known for fighting her neighbors, and even sending inflamitory letters when people want something she disapproves of, even when the majority of the people indicate they want it. Hauxhurst has shown his apparently unethical nature against neighbors of whom he does not approve.
