Jack Hawxhurst fights developers with a vengence, yet apparently he used to be one!
Regardless how you feel about developers, don't you think it odd that Jack Hawxhurst viciously fights developers1, yet according to public record, Jack Hawxhurst used to be a developer?

In an article published in the News-Press on 6/22/03, Scott Hadley noted Hawxhurst efforts to develop property he once owned in Santa Barbara during the 1970s and 1980s. Hawxhurst's was ultimately successful efforts in the late 1980s to get a lot split on 10 acres he owned in Mission Canyon.

After the Santa Barbara Planning Commission initially denied his request, Hawxhurst was granted a modification on an appeal2 to the City Council. The approval allowed him to split the single lot into four roughly 2 1/2-acre lots on Las Canoas Lane. He later sold the home sites, and other people built homes there.

According to records Hawxhurst received about $900,000 on the property for which he paid $250,000. Could this be why Hawxhurst seems so interested in what people are going to make on a project - he's privately measuring their success against his?

1According to the News-Press, at least $480,000 had been spent fighting the Sandpiper project.

2It's interesting to note that Hawxhurst had an appeal path for his project, that ultimately provided success. However in 'Hawxhurst country' such an appeal is impossible!

Could Jacks obsession with money perhaps be due to his days as a developer, or just be just plain envy?
